1,039 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Captains and Contraband
Location: USS Myogi (NCC-65918), Five Forward, Deck 5
Timeline: March 23, 2396

"First Officer's Log, supplemental:

"After our disastrous bungling of diplomatic proceedings on Gamma Zendor, Starfleet Command has elected to relegate the Myogi to light patrol duties while more delicate affairs are being handled by some of our contemporaries, such as the Zodiac, Akagi, and Kaga. Life on board has been relatively uneventful these past 11 weeks, but after everything that our crew has been through, I feel it's a welcome break for everyone.

"The crew seems to be taking a shine to our new civilian policy; granted, our only permanent guest at this time is Miss Sakuragi, but in her time here she has received no shortage of affection from our staff. Likewise, we are all looking forward to the arrival of Maho's first child, whom Doctor Delling reports is on track for a late May delivery, approximately 9 weeks from the time of this recording.

"As a means of celebrating this milestone in Maho's pregnancy, as well as an effort on my part to learn more about human culture, I have been working closely with Maho and other members of the female staff to help plan a baby shower for her and her daughter. Regretfully, Commander Anzai has declined to attend; due in no small part to her Italian heritage, she is of the opinion that giving gifts to an unborn child is bad luck. While Maho is deeply disappointed in her Third Officer's decision not to attend, Keisuke and I have convinced her that it's more a matter of Commander Anzai's cultural beliefs and not of any personal grudges that she harbors towards the Captain- not that I am aware of any."

-End Log."

Five Forward had been selected as the venue to host the baby shower. Namely because Commander Misono had wanted to hold the party in a place that was real and not a holographic fantasy. The choice was not lost on Maho- given that this was the place where Keisuke had dropped down on one knee and asked her hand in marriage, so it was only fitting that another significant event in the development of Maho's family would take place in these walls.

Granted, Maho still deep down knew that Lieutenant Reno likely still hated her for authorizing the restoration of the space to what it was prior to her 'remodeling'- likely why the Lieutenant stepped down from that volunteer work. Maho just hoped that, if Reno showed up as Lieutenant Sinclair's plus one, that those hard feelings wouldn't bubble to the surface.

Maho had done a lot of things earlier in her pregnancy that she wasn't proud of- especially during the time they were transporting Captain Aisaka. -What Maho wouldn't give to forget that woman even existed- but Maho was hoping that a celebration like this would help to heal those wounds and put Maho's past mistakes behind her.

Maho had helped with the setting up as much as she could. However, as she was now 31 weeks pregnant, she seemed to be getting winded a lot easier, and kept having to stop and sit down.

One of these times that Maho was sitting to catch her breath, she was about to ask Ichika another setup-related question when the doors to the lounge opened and the first guests arrived.

"Wey-aye!" Lieutenant Kujo greeted as she strode into the lounge, with Commander Churchill tailing not too far behind. "We come bringing gifts for the beautiful baby of a beautiful couple~"

"Oh, look at how beautiful this is!" Elisabeth cooed as the two women entered. Elisabeth was clutching hers and Karen's gifts for Maho's baby.

However, by the looks she and Karen received from Maho and Ichika seemed to suggest that they might have been a bit too early.

"Oh, I'm sorry- are we a bit early?' Elisabeth asked.

Maho turned back towards Ichika, deferring judgement to her first officer as to whether or not the party was officially 'starting:'

"Oh, not at all, you two," Ichika smiled. "If anything, the celebrations are just getting started-!'

"We're just in time then!" Jane declared as she entered into earshot with Alisha in tow. "Congratulations again, Captain." She showed the wrapped box she held to the First Officer. "Is there somewhere to put this for now?"

"Keisuke and I have a gift table all set up in the corner," Ichika replied, directing everyone's attention towards a small cluster of tables, of which was adorned with a large, pink tablecloth to give the impression of a singular table.

"Excellent. I'll be right back, then." Elisabeth said as she began making her way towards the indicated gift table, with Jane following close behind.

Kurumi entered the room. By her side and holding her hand was Yaeka. She was dressed in a simple but pretty navy pinafore, accompanied by a white collared shirt and a pink ribbon in her hair. "Now, remember. There's no need to be afraid. Everyone here is nice. But you can stay with ne if you want."

Yaeka nodded in response. She still didn't speak much as she was still adapting to her new surroundings.

"Welcome in, everyone." Maho greeted. "While we wait for some of the others to show up, would you like to take a guess as to how old I am in some of these pictures?"

Maho indicated a table where a photo board was placed, adorned with images of Maho at various ages. At the foot of the board was placed a stack of papers and a good amount of Myogi pens.

"Ooh! I know!" Karen exclaimed, pointing to "image 10," which appeared to be some sort of ultrasound image. "That last image there was from when she was a... a bairn!"

Karen was cut off when Elisabeth suddenly backhanded her in the back of the head.

"Owie... Karen whined, rubbing the back of her head.

"Well, number seven is a bit easier," Jane suggested, pointing to the cadet uniform. "Just need to see how many pips are on that collar." The problem was the angle didn't show that side of her collar clearly. "Huh. Maybe not. Twenty-two maybe?"

To be continued...
