Too Many Broken Bones to Count (Backpost)

1,036 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Indivisible
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: After “While the Iron’s Hot (Part 4)”

Back from Rheuys, Jane Sinclair was eager to get back to the bridge, but the ache in her hand and wrist was not something she could ignore. Nor would the command staff have permitted it. Commanders Takahashi and Anzai both ordered her to sickbay before doing anything else. They took her sidearm and any other equipment she had been in possession of, leaving her solely responsible for her health and wellbeing.

One deck down, a few sections off, and she was in a most familiar place: Sickbay.

She had not worked yet with the new CMO, though they had been introduced. She was comfortable enough to give him a nod as she walked into the centre of the ship's medical facility, trying to ignore the throb in her arm.

With every new arrival at sickbay, Kael's first instinct was to assist. Though this time, his job was slightly different. Unlike the USS Opera, the Myogi had a full complement. His role was now to delegate and delegate he did, he assigned himself to his new patient.

There was no reason to assume she was here looking for someone or making a social call, no one who came through these doors today was here to make pleasantries. With every other physician occupied he drew the attention of the nurse with his hand as he greeted the lieutenant.

''Miss Sinclair, lets find you a place to sit down first"

He motioned over to a recently emptied space.

Jane followed his guidance and sat down on the offered biobed, holding her hand up for Doctor Ryo and Nurse Ichihara to examine. "On Rheuys, an Elachi tried to brain me with the butt of its rifle. I blocked."

The Nurse had a tricorder out and held the medical scanner over the affected area. Imagery of the bones in the pilot's hand, wrist, and forearm displayed on a wall monitor.

''Computer, magnify" He slowly manipulated the hand to see around the bones of the hand and wrist. ''This will just take a moment'' The imagery moved along with the hand, revealing the damage. ''Edema. Caused by hairline fractures on three carpal bones, Miss Ichihara, 2cc of anesthizine please." He placed her hand down carefully and begun to calibrate the regenerator.

Jane winced as her hand was set down. Gentle or not, now that the rush of combat had passed and now she was feeling the pain of it more intensely.

Thankfully Nurse Ichihara had prepared the hypo, double-checked the dose of the prescribed painkiller, and handed it to her superior officer.

Kael took the hypospray and administered it directly on Jane's shoulder. "Nothing I am about to do right now is supposed to hurt but you might feel lightheaded, try to lie down" The blue light of the regenerator seeped through the cracks. The bone could be seen in subsequent scans, assuming its correct form. The more he saw the cracks on the bone the more he wondered. "Miss Sinclair, this doesn't seem to be the first time something like this happened to you."

Jane let out a giggle as she lay down, the lightheadedness making her a bit giddy. “Oh, doc, I think I’ve lost track of the number of bones I’ve broken. Proximans aren’t exactly blessed with bone density, are we?”

''Really?'' Kael spoke over the sounds of the tricorder, looking for any mistakes or imperfections on the mended bone. "We can trick the bone into healing itself, but the body remembers." Satisfied with the result he turned the device off. "Give yourself a few minutes before getting up. After that, you have the rest of the day off. Rest that arm"

Jane instinctively twisted and flexed her wrist and fingers. She knew any pain was being blocked by the drug that Mai had prepared, but she could still sense that it was intact again. "Thanks Doctor. I'll go rest it. I shouldn't be needed for a while anyway. Any limitations?"

"Limitations? Hands are delicate things, treat them as such. If you feel any pain this time tomorrow report to sickbay. Other than that, I'll go through your medical record and see what we can do from now on" He used a nearby terminal to record the readings from the arm and to note that lieutenant Sinclair would be on medical leave for the rest of the day.

With a nod, Jane sat up and then got to her feet. “I’ll take it easy and watch out for pain. I do a lot of mechanical work in the shuttlebay and can’t accept a loss of dexterity. Tonight it’ll be rest, maybe watch something on the screen. Veg out, as they say!”

He smiled. ''Mechanical work? Maybe its time to take on an apprentice" He turned the instruments off one by one "Or several" Judging from her movements it seemed like she would have no problems walking back to her quarters.

“An apprentice?” Jane shook her head. “Supervising isn’t the same thing as doing, doctor, I’m sure you understand. Besides, that’s not about duty. It’s a hobby as much as an assignment.”

"I don't understand it myself. In fact I should be doing it right now." He removed his gloves. ''Maybe if you try it first you can give me some pointers." He almost forgot. "Oh, is there anything I should know that would not be on the record? Untreated injuries? Exposure to contagious substances? Medical treatment by non-Federation personnel?"

“I got some first aid for my wrist on Rheuys,” Jane answered. “Just a minor pain blocker though. Enough to get me through the crisis. The feeling was back by the time I came into sickbay.”

Kael made a note of it on her file. He did not detect anything residual but it was better to be thorough on this. "That's all I need, thank you Miss Sinclair"

Dismissed, hand and wrist already feeling much better, Jane nodded to the Doctor and Nurse and left their medical domain, eager to rest a bit before the action started.
