A Review of Performance

861 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Trade Troubles
Location: Maho's ready room, Deck 1
Timeline: After 'Be Prepared'

When Maho showed up later that morning after the drill to relieve Commander Misono, she was pleased to find a stack of PADDs on her desk containing the various departmental evaluation reports. When she got to reading the Science evaluation report, she was less than impressed: Not only had Ensign Talmage slept though most of the drill until it was almost over, nobody else in Science thought to report in for the department. Such sloppy performance obviously wasn't going to cut it. It would have never flown under Miyahara, and Maho had no intention of letting it fly under her. Maho set down the PADD with the Science report and tapped her combadge:

=A="Takahashi to Talmage:"=A= She spoke. =A="Report to my ready room."=A=

"Connor ran to the ready room. And knocked on the door he knew why he was here and he was already feeling the guilt of his actions.

"Enter:" Came Maho's response

Connor came in and waited to be seated per Starfleet custom. He wanted to speak and apologize for his actions but deemed it to distasteful to a senior officer. So he kept quiet.

"Take a seat, ensign:" Maho said in a stern voice, motioning towards one of the chairs in front of the desk. "I'd like to discuss your performance concerning last night's drill."

Connor took a look at the captain knowing what she was about to say. He was in a state of guilt of shame. Hed decided maybe he was Starfleet material after all. He wasn't who he said he was gonna be.

"I'm sorry" connor said as he took of his badge and handed it to the captain. "Starfleet officers don't slack off their jobs. I'm not the person for the job find someone else" connor said.

"That we can be in agreement on:" Maho said. "However, I find it hard to believe that they're teaching cadets to embrace failure at the Academy these days. If that's true, then Starfleet's future is bleak, and we'll crumble faster than a New Year's cookie."

"There....not...Its not Starfleet. I grew up with a dad who excepted perfection in everything. I guess living in nowhere land Texas would do that to you. Even tho he taught me to be prepared for the unexpected I still get caught of guard way more then I should. I was hoping Starfleet would help me fix that. Maybe I was wrong though." Connor explained.

"Ensign; you and I are a lot more alike than you realize:" Maho said after a brief pause. "My mom raised me in a rather strict manner, expecting me to achieve victory at all costs. It's no secret that I became a star Parrises Squares player because of my conditioning; I'd even received offers from professional teams, but I chose Starfleet because I admired my dad's work."

Maho gestured to the portrait on the wall behind Connor.

"Miyahara saw promise in me, but began second-guessing himself after I realized that being here was an acrobatics act in order to keep up with everything." She continued. "And ultimately, it was only because of my now-husband, Miyahara's trusted third-in-command, that I was kept around. Ultimately, that turned out to be a good thing, as it turned out the Myogi would need someone like me to write its next chapter. So you see, Ensign; We all might second guess ourselves from time to time, but every role in Starfleet is important: From captains such as myself all the way down to the greenest Ensigns such as yourself. And if we lose sight of that, then we have truly failed."

Connor let out a sigh of relief. Captain i am sorry I over reacted but more importantly I should apologize for not being on alert during the drill. I guess I hold myself to a high standard because I'm the first Starfleet officer in my family. I know that my father wants me to succeed within Starfleet. So there's a lot of pressure there"

"Obviously, your actions during the drill are inexcusable:" Maho said. "If that had been a real attack, you'd be facing a court martial for dereliction of duty. But that's the reason we hold drills, to identify and resolve any weak links. So tell me, Ensign; what can we do to make sure you don't repeat what happened during the drill?"

"I completely agree captain..to be honest it was my own fault for not being alert. I'll have to keep my guard up more if I'm being completely honest" connor replied.

"Do you feel like you need to see Dr. Delling or Counselor Scott regarding this issue?" Maho asked.

"If I'm being honest I'd rather not involve doctors unless it's a absolute necessity. As I said I'll be more cautious."

"Very well;" Maho said. "But, this incident is still going on your record, and I will be making a note requiring medical intervention if your behavior fails to improve. Do I make myself clear, Ensign?"

"Yes captain I understand." Connor replied.

"Very well;" Maho said. "You are dismissed, Ensign."
