1,575 words; about a 8 minute read

Mission: Trade Troubles
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: The morning after "Brittle Bones and Shaky Treatments"

Jane Sinclair’s eyelids began to flutter open. The sound of equipment drew her out of a shockingly deep sleep. Equipment? Right. This was sickbay. She’d spent the night after her allergic reaction to the muscle/bone mass treatment knocked her off her feet.

She was lying on a sickbay biobed, covered in a blanket and wearing a hospital gown. Doctor Delling had insisted on keeping her overnight, and the overnight nurse, Ichihara, helped get her settled. The pilot hoped they wouldn’t keep her longer. She had work to do ahead of the Nikko rendezvous.

She tried to sit up and see if anyone was nearby.

Fortunately for her, there was. The attending nurse, an attractive mocha-skinned young Risian woman, clear from the silver ja'risia that sat high and proud upon her forehead, was immediately at her side with a tricorder in her hand. "The sleeping beauty wakes." The nurse teased, voice comforting, sultry and sweet like honey. "How do you feel, ma'am? Are you currently experiencing any discomfort?"

Jane looked up and smiled. The morning nurse was cute; she hadn’t seen her around the ship before. And her voice…. She tried to answer but her voice was raspy. She winced and gestured toward her throat, hoping the nurse would bring her something.

Leilani had, over the course of her training and rotations had seen patients act as such many, many times, each time for similar reasons. The Risian was quick to fetch her a glass of water and press it gently into her hand. "Here. Drink. Take your time." She said.

Jane took the cup and slowly took a couple of mouthfuls. The cool water helped immensely, right away eliminating the pain in her throat and bringing her voice back to her. "Thank you," she said softly. She took another small sip and tried to sit up further. "I'm feeling better, actually. A bit stiff but that might be the biobed. Whatever Doctor Delling gave me has gotten rid of my cramping, at least right now anyway."

The attractive young nurse smiled warmly. "Indeed you have. Your biobed scans seem to correlate that and have for a little while, actually! He's actually given you clearance to leave, in fact!" Leilani smiled, a brilliant white pearly smile that could've lit up a room if she so tried. Perhaps it was no wonder she'd gone into nursing; with a smile like that she'd warm the heart of any patient.

"'Course, if you suddenly experience any further pain or discomfort you're welcome to come back and we'll be more than pleased to help you..." The Risian said. "I'll certainly be pleased to see a beauty like you back here - for the right reasons, of course..." Lani winked coyly. "I'm only doing my job, and that's to help make you feel better."

“I waited three days last time,” Jane replied. “I’ll come back right away this time.” She blushed at the nurse’s banter and flirting. Whether a part of her bedside manner or something more, she liked that kind of attention. “I’m sorry, I didn’t get your name, Nurse…?”

"Leilani. Leilani Mo'naa if you want my name in full." The nurse smiled warmly. "I know who you are - lieutenant Sinclair, the chief flight control officer. You know, I don't think I vould do your job, managing all the helmsmen and shuttlecraft pilots and so on. Flying the ship is large business indeed isn't it? Good thing we have people like you at the helm - and I'm certainly not complaining about the fact that you'll look amazing while doing it..."

“And I can’t see myself doing anything else,” Jane said, grinning now. “Nothing like making the Myogi dance on my fingertips. But I couldn’t do what you do. Keeping us all healthy and well.” She swung her legs over the edge of the biobed and tried to sit up all the way, giving her cup with a bit of water left to the nurse. “Leilani. Pretty name.”

"It's Risian." She clarified with a giggle as she took the cup off her hands. "I'm from Risa as you can tell. I don't know many pilots called Jane, but then again I don't know any as good-looking either..." The young Risian winked.

Jane winked back. "Doctor Delling said I had bad hives on my back. It isn't itching anymore, has it cleared up?" From her seated position, she shifted the gown forward a bit so her back was exposed to the air.

Leilani took a glance behind and smiled approvingly at the sight of smooth, relatively unblemished skin. "It's cleared up pretty well, I'd say. Had I not known you had hives before I'd never know you had them in fact." She snapped her tricorder open and scanned her back; evidently satisfied with the results of what she saw she put the device away and made a final note in her PADD. "...displays no present signs of hives." She muttered. Probably reading patient notes aloud. "Okay then! You can go whenever you'd like - your uniform's in the drawer if you wanna change back, I'll give you some privacy."

"You're fine," Jane said as she got to her feet and found the drawer. She never had qualms about dress. She remembered the day she met the CSO on her first assignment, stripping off a dirty coverall and donning a flight uniform in front of him without a second thought. And tSo, her back turned to the Risian, she unclasped the top of the gown and let it fall off of her arms. She caught it in her hands and placed it on the bed, and then began to get dressed.

"So is the Myogi your first assignment?" she asked, turning her head slightly so she could see Leilani in her periphery.

"Yep! I'm fresh out of Starfleet Academy and excited to see what else might come! It's exciting, you know, like taking on a new job and everything's so new and unfamiliar..." God, she sounded like every other overly enthusiastic new ensign, she thought to herself with a giggle. Jane had probably heard many of those talk like that - possibly even from her own department.

"Obviously this ain't your first assignment - y'know, since you're the chief flight control officer and all, gotta have experience for that." She remarked. "Any tips for me as a fresh-faced pretty young thing who hopes to someday train to be a doctor?"

The woman’s enthusiasm was infectious, making Jane smile. “I actually started in the enlisted stream, but went to the Academy to become an officer in my late twenties. So I had extra experience as an Ensign. All I can say is get as much experience as you can. Shadow your superior officers. Try other departments too, and see what skills you have. You never know when you might need to defend a patient, or fly the rescue shuttle.”

"Shadow my superiors, you say? Try other departments?" Lani smiled mischievously. "So you won't mind if I asked, perchance, to learn from you to fly, you've gotta be pretty good to be chief flight officer ain't you? I'd learn from the best and get a cute instructor at the same time. It's a useful skill isn't it?"

Jane grinned. “Oh, stop, you,” she teased as she did up the last piece of her uniform and straightened it at the waist. “It’s cliché for a pilot to claim they’re the best, but I was a competitive racer. A good one, too. I plan to teach a few of the officers so we have a good cadre of emergency pilots. Happy to add you to the list. One on one, of course. Best way to learn,” she added with another cheeky wink.

"One on one sounds good. I get my teacher's undivided attention and an awesome one at that. Maybe I might just be your next flying ace." Lani teased. "I tend to go all in when I do something, you know, especially when learning something new. I promise I shan't disappoint."

“Always good to have someone that goes all in,” Jane said. “I’d say I can teach anyone but the Counselor on my first assignment was next to useless at the controls, so I’ll say almost anyone.” She looked at her arms and legs, and tried to turn to see her back, and frowned. “Can you see if the uniform is bunched anywhere? It feels off.”

Leilani was instantly at her side, checking every part of her uniform with practised ease. "Got it. Hold still..." The Risian grasped part of her left pant leg and gave it a good tug. "There! I don't see any more bunching up and such though, so you should be fine! Can I help you with anything else?"

"I don't think so," Jane answered. Her uniform did feel more comfortable, and with it back on she was ready for the day. "Thank you, Leilani. Catch you later for a drink in the mess hall sometime, yeah?"

"Catch you soon, lovely. For those lessons and that drink." Leilani smiled and walked away to take care of the necessary paperwork. A new friend made - she'd call that a win any day.
