What We Lost

899 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Insurrection
Location: Ready Room
Timeline: Concurrent with "Hollow Victory"

Maho had barely gotten back aboard the Myogi and Commodore Honda had given the command codes back to her when a communique for Tohru came in from Admiral Benson, which she took in the ready room. One of Benson's talking points was Captain Aisaka's report on Captain Felnoir's demise, as Felnoir was one of the captains under Tohru's command.

"He's... Dead?" Tohru asked.

"I'm afraid so." Benson said. "I'll be speaking with Commander Sakamoto over appointing a successor shortly. I have a promising candidate, one which was recently praised by Commander Ichika Misono, another Inuto. This candidate worked on the Akina during Project Jomo, and likely knows the Akina better than even Felnoir. I've spoken to Starfleet Command and they're behind me on this. I just hope Commander Sakamoto feels the same."

Benson then straightened his jacket before changing subjects.

"In the meanwhile, Commodore; I have recalled the Zodiac to bring you to Starbase 234 in the H'atoria sector. Rear Admiral Tempest has requested an audience with you." He informed Tohru. "You will have until Captain Sohma arrives to get your affairs in order. Is that understood?"

"Yes, sir." Tohru said.

"Very good. Benson out." Benson said, terminating the connection.

Maho turned to Tohru.

"Commander Misono's not going to take the news well." Maho sighed. "It might soften the blow if she hears it from me rather than you."

"Understood." Tohru nodded. "From what Benson has said, I need to prepare to ship out of here with my husband."

"I will speak with Captain Sohma about sending a shuttle to take you directly from our shuttlebay." Maho said. "If you wouldn't mind sticking around to assist me in getting my ship's affairs in order?"

"Certainly, Captain." Tohru smiled softly. "What are you going to need my services for?"

"Engineering would like to restart repair work, and I have to break the news to Tristana that she's moving." Maho said. "And if there's still time before the Zodiac arrives, there's something more I'd like to do. But we'll discuss that later."

Tohru nodded.

"Good luck, Captain." She said. "From what I know on the Inuto, it seems like one that holds a Captaincy is something of a living legend in their culture, and one such living legend that was snuffed out so soon won't be received well."

"I am well aware of the risk, Commodore." Maho said.

As Tohru left, Maho pressed a button on her desk.

"Takahashi to Misono, report to the ready room at your earliest opportunity." Maho said.

=A=Copy that, Captain; I'll be there in five,=A= Ichika responded. =A=Misono out.=A=

Maho sat back in her chair and sighed. She didn't know much about Inuto mourning rituals, and she was hoping that she'd never have to find out, especially with an Inuto Captain being deceased. Yet here she was, five minutes away from learning about it.

If only Miyahara hadn't been so damn stupid... Maho thought to herself, placing her hand on her belly.

At this point, Maho was now 10, almost 11 weeks expectant, and was fast approaching the end of her first trimester. Dr. Delling had told her that the end of the first trimester was normally when the morning sickness released its death grip, but it was possible to still experience it throughout the pregnancy, and furthermore, Maho had been told it was likely that she'd continue to experience it until the end, given how severe her morning sickness thus far had been.

Her musings were interrupted by the door chime sounding from across the room, alerting her to Ichika's arrival.

"Enter." Maho called.

The doors to the ready room snapped open, and in walked Commander Misono, evidently exhausted from their latest ordeal, but at the same time relieved to have made it out alive.

"Is something wrong, Captain?" she greeted warily.

"I hope not." Maho said. "That being said, I just got done speaking with Admiral Benson, and I'm afraid he doesn't have good news."

Her curiosity evidently piqued, Ichika motioned for her to continue.

"Benson brought to my attention a report from Captain Aisaka:" Maho began. "In it, Captain Arles Felnoir of the USS Akina disobeyed a direct order and attempted to bring Miyahara in... Unfortunately, Captain Felnoir gave his life, and Miyahara got away."

Ichika's face paled as she put two-and-two together; her mouth flapped open and closed as if she intended to speak, but no words came.

Maho paused for a moment to let the news sink in.

"If it's any consolation, before I was even born, my grandfather was among the 11,000 Starfleet personnel that were slaughtered at Wolf 359..." She said.

Ichika staggered back, visibly shaking as her hands balled up into fists. Her legs momentarily bowed before giving out completely; dropping to her knees, her arms splayed out to either side of her, Ichika threw her head back and unleashed a guttural, disconsolate howl.

Maho reeled back when she heard the howl, and she knew nothing more could be done.

"If you need anything, I'll be in my quarters..." She said softly, rising from the chair and leaving the ready room.
