Mission:
Handling the Fallout
Location: Bridge/Ready Room
Timeline: After Rookies (Part 1)
Previously, on Star Trek: Myogi:
Takumi could tell by Keisuke's eyes that there was something else he wasn't telling him:
"Hold on, is there something I'm missing here?" Takumi questioned.
Keisuke smiled.
"You'll hear all about it when we catch up later on." He said, patting Takumi on the back, causing Takumi to wince a little.
And now, the continuation:
At that moment, the turbolift arrived on the bridge, and the two of them stepped off. Keisuke led Takumi across the bridge to a closed door, which he rang a chime to.
"Enter:" A woman's voice could be heard on the other side.
The door swooshed open, and Keisuke led Takumi into the office beyond. Behind the desk was a young brunette around Takumi's age, and sitting in front of the desk was none other than Connor from earlier.
"Hey, babe;" Keisuke addressed the brunette. "Sorry to interrupt; I found this straggler in the shuttle bay, says he's yet to report in."
"Of course." The brunette nodded. "You may leave us."
With a nod, Keisuke turned and left the office, giving Takumi one final glance as a reminder to consider his earlier words. Once Keisuke was gone, Takumi snapped to attention and gave a salute to the brunette.
"Ensign Takumi Fujiwara, reporting for duty as ordered, captain." He said.
"At ease, Fujiwara." The brunette responded after returning the salute. "If you could just have a seat, and we can discuss your assignment momentarily."
"Of course," Takumi responded, proceeding to take the seat that was offered to him.
Having addressed the other ensign, Maho sat back down in the chair and turned back to Connor.
"Now, Mr. Talmage: Where were we?" She asked.
"Ensign Connor Talmadge reporting for duty sir" he replied.
"Right, we were past that part;" Maho said, overlooking the Ensign's calling her 'Sir' instead of 'Ma'am', as it could be chocked up to the fact that he was fresh out of the Academy. "Now, when I asked for a new Chief Science Officer, Starfleet gives me an Ensign fresh out of the Academy: What exactly makes you stand apart from the other graduates from your class?"
"With all do respect Sir I cant really say that anything does.I mean Im definely no Checov. However Growing up on a farm taught me one thing Doenst matter how much you hate what you do. The hard work is gonna pay off in the long run. Captain I cant offer you my services as a top of my class Starlfeet graduate however I can offer my assintance in Terms of relaibity. I dont think I was anyones first choice but I gotta work with it."
"Well phrased, Mr. Talmadge." Maho responded. "I take it you're familiar with the duties of a science officer, being fresh out of the Academy and all?"
"I-I know enough to manage. I mean Science is how I got into the Academy so long story short yes Ma'mm"
"Very good." Maho nodded. "The New Orleans class is smaller than other ships, and their departments are smaller to match. I believe having a smaller department is a better way for an officer to learn their duties, and in your case, the expanded duties of being a department head. As there is no third officer, your direct superior will be the second officer. If you have any questions pertaining to running a department, feel free to go to him or another department head: While science won't necessarily be their strong suits, they should be able to give you some helpful pointers in regards to the more... Managerial aspects of your job."
"Thank you ma'mm"
"Very good." Maho said. "Unless you have any more questions, you are dismissed."
"Nope thank you ma'am" Connor replied.
After Connor left, Maho turned her attention to the other ensign sitting at her desk.
"Now, Fujiwara, was it?" She asked.
"Yes, Ma'am." Takumi responded, standing up to attention. "Ensign Takumi Fujiwara."
"Fujiwara, as in Maaya Fujiwara fame?" Maho asked.
"I never really knew my mother:" Takumi responded. "If my father's to be believed, they got divorced shortly before I was born, and the custody battle took the better part of my toddlerhood to resolve. I think Maaya was the name on my birth certificate..."
"Well, one of the final projects your mother worked on was Project Jomo." Maho responded, gesturing to the room around them. "Yard engineer Fujiwara was one of Utopia Planitia's brightest minds; and it was a damn shame we lost her."
"O... Kay..." Takumi muttered, unsure what to make of this revelation about his mother.
"Anyway, your duties as flight control officer mean you're responsible for flying this bird as well as keeping our shuttlebay in order." Maho said. "As of right now, there's no Chief of Flight Control, so you'll be reporting directly to the command staff for the time being."
"Alright." Takumi responded.
Maho closed her eyes and folder her arms under her chest.
"Miyahara used to say this to every new flight control officer we got:" She said. "Flying a starship is an enormous responsibility; one scratch on my hull, and you'll spend the night in the brig. Think you can handle such a responsibility, ensign?"
"Surely, you can't be serious!" Takumi spluttered, his eyes going wide.
"I am serious, and don't call me Shirley." Maho said before laughing at her Miyahara impression. "He never did make good with those threats, and he only ever used the brig as last resort to maintain order. You'd have to have really acted out to see the inside of the Brig."
"Whew, that's a relief..." Takumi sighed.
"But I take it you understand this is a serious undertaking regardless?" Maho asked.
"Yes, ma'am." Takumi responded.
"Very well:" Maho said. "Provided you have no questions for me, you are dismissed as well."
