Mission: Captains and Contraband
Shirro had finished unpacking her stuff into her quarters. She put her dusty old leather jacket into a closet.Followed by her silver heart necklace. She wanted to wear it but knew it was against starfleet policy. So she put away.
She then left her quarters and decided to check in with the captain.
She eventually found the captains quarters and knocked on her door.
The door was answered by a blonde man with 3 rank pips, indicating his rank of Commander.
"Is there something I can do for you, Lieutenant?" He asked.
"Apologies sir, Lieutenant Talmages temporary replacement I was here to report to the Captain, but I can come back later if needed." Shirro replied
"No, it's alright give me a second..." The man responded, turning around. "Babe, the new science officer's here to see you!"
"Tell them I'll be right out!" A female voice responded.
The man then turned back to face Shirro.
"She'll be here to see you shortly." He said, motioning for Shirro to come in. "In the meantime, you're welcome to come in and have a seat."
"Thank you sir" shirro replied as she sat in a nearby chair.
Within Shirro's field of view was an active screen, showing footage of antique ground cars in the middle of a race:
"Tirpitz still has the lead, but is barely holding onto it as Kanno chews on her bumper!" The announcer said. "But pretty soon, Kanno's going to have problems of her own, because here comes Bluegarden!"
Shiro patiently sat watching the cars, while waiting for the captain.
The man noticed that Shirro's attention was drawn to the screen.
"You like car racing, Lieutenant?" He asked.
"Im more into antique cars, grew up working on them" she replied.
"Well, I'm sure you'll like the MFG, then." The man responded, pointing to the screen. "That's what's on right now. It's one of the few professional antique car racing series in the Federation. People from all over the Federation come to compete."
The view on the screen switched to that of an onboard camera. The dashboard layout was indicative that the camera was mounted inside an early 21st century Toyota GT86:
"For instance, that 86 we're now riding along with; the driver is an Andorian:" He explained. "I must say, she's one of the better Andorian racers I've seen, but then again, we did just race and beat a bunch of Andorians in a... Friendly competition."
"Yeah I heard about that, Quite a impressive feat actually" shirro replied. "I grew up in a biker gang but we often used cars as well. So I'm a sucker for this stuff"
It was at this moment that a woman emerged from another room. The woman had four rank pips on her chest. If anyone here was going to be the Captain, it was her:
"Honestly, going to the bathroom is such a hassle now." She complained as she stroked her rounded belly. "Once you start peeing, you don't stop..."
The woman trailed off when she noticed Shirro.
"And who's our house guest, babe?" She immediately asked.
"Im Lieutenant shirro kamanda, Your new chief science officer," she replied
"Lieutenant Kamada." The woman responded. "I saw that you had come aboard, but I wasn't expecting you to report in until tomorrow morning, so props to you for making a good first impression: I'm Captain Maho Takahashi; and you've already met my husband and our Second Officer; Keisuke Takahashi."
"Thank you Captain, yeah I just arrived a few hours ago. First instinct was to meet you." She replied. "I do have a question if that's OK" she added
"Go ahead, Lieutenant." Maho said as she settled onto one of the couches opposite where Shirro was sitting.
"What was Talmage like? I knew I knew him in the Academy but only for about 6 months I ended transferring to a different academy. My understanding is he referred me to you. Now I'm not trying to replace him or be him.Just trying to get an understanding of how he liked to things so I know what I'm getting myself into." She asked.
A few moments of silence passed as Maho pondered Shirro's question:
"Lieutenant Talmage was... An interesting case:" She said. "He was among some of the first new officers assigned to the ship as part of the restaffing I had to conduct after I had taken command: I was brand new to the captain's chair at the time, so I didn't really have much in the way of expectations. But Talmage... Didn't exactly excel at his work: He was always the last one into staff meetings... When he bothered to even show. He slept through unscheduled preparedness drills in the dead of night... Frankly, I'm not surprised to find out that he'd slept with another cadet in the Academy and had fathered a child with her."
Shirro looked at the captain with a rather dull look. "That's not all that surprising. He was one of the smartest in my class but definitely lazy . Ill give him credit for being there for his daughter though." she concluded. "Anyways is there anything I should know? like what's been happening?" she asked.
"Well, I'm sure you've heard about the recent attack on Starfleet Headquarters by now, right?" Maho asked. "It's all over the news."
"Oh yeah one of the reasons i was assigned here so quickly. Gotta love being shoved into action the first 5 minutes of deployment" she joked.
"Good; then you'll be familiar with what will likely be our mission moving forward:" Maho said. "I have no doubt that the violence that started at Starfleet Headquarters will be the last time we clash with extremism: There's been growing dissatisfaction with the Federation by several of its member worlds; and no doubt the quelling of the Starfleet Headquarters uprising will only serve to galvanize their views of us: That the Federation now stands against everything they believe in."
"Of course Captain." Shirro replied.
"So, here's your first set of orders, Lieutenant:" Maho said. "I want you to take tonight and get settled into your quarters: Tomorrow at 0900 sharp, you will report to the Science labs for your orientation."
Maho looked over at her husband before her gaze returned to Shirro.
"Since you've gone to the trouble of coming here, Keisuke can cook you a warm meal to take with you if you want." She added.
"Sometimes, homemade sometimes just tastes better than replicated, even if all the ingredients are replicated" Keisuke said.
