Last Minute Additions

772 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Handling the Fallout
Location: Bridge/Ready Room
Timeline: After 'Rookies', before 'Speed Demons'

Takumi exited the ready room after having spoken with the captain. Things were to be rather interesting aboard this ship: Takumi made his way over to the empty conn officers' station, running his hand along the console. Though the shape of the console itself was old, the tech packed into it was state of the art.

New Orleans class, huh? Takumi thought to himself. Well, if the captain says my mom worked on it, it must be somewhat good: I can't wait to see how you fly, Myogi...

At that moment, Takumi's attention was caught by the sound of the turbolift door opening, and someone else in red stepped onto the bridge: He had noticed the tall woman's rank pips being that of a Lieutenant JG, indicative that she was just barely his superior. He put up his free hand and waved to her.

"Hello!" He called out. "Here to meet with the captain?"

“Yes, I am,” answered Jane as she surveyed the bridge. So this is where the magic happens.

Lieutenant jg Jane Sinclair had boarded the Myogi naught but twenty minutes earlier and already she dreamed about getting out among the stars and seeing what the ship could do. Her previous assignments had all been aboard fast ships and while this one was older, it was no slouch.

Regrettably, it was also the only time she couldn’t fly something to her assignment. No shuttle ride to a ship in deep space. Just a passenger transport to Earth and a walk across the gangway to get aboard. They weren’t flying anywhere anytime soon.

“I take it you’re Mr. Fujiwara,” she said, walking to the helm station at which he sat. “Jane Sinclair.”

"Takumi Fujiwara:" Takumi said, extending his hand. "Pleasure to meet you, Miss Sinclair."

“Which of these doors is the Ready Room?” she asked.

Takumi turned and indicated the door to the right of the big viewscreen. He was familiar with the layout, having read up on the schematics of the Galaxy class one night when he was bored. The New Orleans class bridge was laid out surprisingly similarly to that of a Galaxy. However, on a smaller scale:

"The door to the right when facing the viewscreen." He explained.

“Thank you,” she said with a smile and nod before going to find the aforementioned door to the viewscreen’s right.

She chimed the door and bounced on the balls of her feet as she waited to be summoned.

"Enter." Came a female voice from the other side of the door.

The verbal cue caused the door to open and into the Ready Room walked Jane. She stood at attention in front of her commanding officer’s desk.

“Lieutenant junior grade Jane Sinclair, reporting for duty.”

Maho's usual stern expression was punctuated by a slight confusion at the sight of Jane. She briefly glanced down at a PADD and then back up to Jane.

"You must be a last minute addition." She said. "My records indicate that Ensign Fujiwara was the only conn officer available to spare. Nonetheless, it's good to have someone with a little experience under their belt on board as well; Ensign Fujiwara is fresh out of the Academy, and the ride was bound to be rough. Having an experienced helmsman on board certainly puts me a little more at ease."

“Happy to be of service, Captain,” Jane said. “It also means one of us can handle the helm while the other flies down a landing party. I’d also recommend cross-training a handful of other officers as relief pilots.” She smiled. “Pardon me, ma’am. I might be getting ahead of myself.”

"Actually, your suggestion holds merit." Maho responded. "I shall have a note made in regards to it. Anways, as a Flight Control Officer, your duties shall be split with Ensign Fujiwara; he didn't leave too long ago, so I'm sure you've met him on your way here. I take it you two can work it out amongst yourselves who takes what shift?"

“Yes, ma’am,” Jane answered formally. “You can leave that to us.”

"Very well." Maho said. "Any other questions you might have for me?"

“Not right now, ma’am,” Jane answered. “But if I think of any later, I’ll ask you, Captain.”

"Very well." Maho said. "If for some reason I am unavailable, feel free to ask another member of the command staff. But for now, dismissed!"
