Sabotage! Part 2: All-Nighter

1,357 words; about a 7 minute read

Mission: Handling the Fallout
Location: USS Myogi (NCC-65918), Main Engineering, Deck 14
Timeline: During "Something Something Engineering"

"And I take it you've spoken with Lieutenant Pratt on what it is that we need replicated?" Commander Misono inquired as the two of them rode the Turbolift down to Deck 14.

“Yes, ma’am,” Jane said, standing next to the much shorter first officer and the slightly taller engineer. “Mr. Pratt has a list of everything we need, and I did my best to order it based on priority and ease of manufacture.”

Commander Misono nodded. "Excellent; with any luck, this should be an in-and-out affair."

The turbolift gently ground to a halt, alerting the trio that they had arrived at their destination. The doors gently slid back to reveal the gentle blue ambience of the warp core emanating from just around the corner.

Lieutenant JG Johnston was standing at an engineering console, performing the Level 1 maintenance diagnostic Lieutenant Pratt had ordered be carried out, and did not immediately turn to greet the XO or chief of Flight Control when the turbolift arrived in Engineering.

Instead it was an Ensign that turned to see who'd entered, then sighed heavily as he made his way over quickly, "Ma'ams, welcome to engineering, I'm Ensign Halloran and if there's anything I can help you with?" He seemed experienced, or at least not fresh out of the Academy, but obviously the one who was somewhat in charge at the moment, with Terry busy with his diagnostic.

"As a matter of fact," Commander Misono nodded. "We'd come down here to get a production estimate from Lieutenant Brandon Pratt. You wouldn't happen to know where we might find him?"

“Ummmm…” The Ensign glanced at Terry again, then sighed, “The new Senior Chief came aboard today, ma’am, and borrowed the Lieutenant to help her with some sort of problem.. We just got a call a few minutes ago that apparently the issue was rather more time-consuming than anticipated and that they would be spending the rest of the shift dealing with it, and then some.” He glanced at the wall chrono which said 1505 on it.

“Uh-oh,” Jane said as she took a standing spot near the Ensign. “Did he at least mention that we were expected? It has to do with replacing the lost tools and spare parts in the shuttlebay.”

The ensign shook his head and looked back towards Terry, "Lieutenant Johnston, did Lieutenant Pratt say that we were expecting visitors, sir?"

"Not that I've heard;" Terry responded, his eyes unmoving from the console as he worked. "Only orders to get this level 1 diagnostic completed in a timely manner."

"Well, I suppose it can't be helped," Commander Misono sighed. "In the meantime, Ensign, would you happen to know who's in charge of this department while Lieutenant Pratt is attending to the issue?"

"I, um..." Halloran looked back at Terry, who was just plain too busy to be bothered and his shoulders slumped, "Ma'am, I am." He admitted, "I mean, we're in dock, so it's not like it's a critical duty, just have to keep my eye out for any problems while going through 'The List' of things that need to be done, so it's not like it's really hard to do." He was nervous with the Commander present and it was obvious, "But what can I help you with, ma'am?"

"Well, seeing as you're offering to help," Commander Misono muttered, stealing a glance over at Jane. "Lieutenant Sinclair and I were hoping to get a production estimate on how long it'll take your department to replicate the items in question; we can always provide you with a manifest of what we'll need, if you don't already have one on-file.

"Depends on how much you need to replicate." Terry responded, still unmoving from his console. "At which point I could give you a timetable using Miyahara-level efficiency, because knowing Commander Takahashi, that's the rate she'll want it done by, and if it takes a minute too slow, heads will roll."

Commander Misono turned to Jane and motioned for her to take it from there.

“Computer,” Jane said, her eyes looking up slightly toward the ceiling, “display file Sinclair Manifest Nine-Five-dash-three on the Master System Display.”

On a large monitor, a visual of the New Orleans-class ship disappeared, replaced by around forty rows of text. Item names, model numbers, and quantities of spare parts and tools that needed to be replicated and brought to the shuttlebay, top ones being highest priority. “Here. Two hundred and thirty-six items of thirty-eight classifications. Smallest being self-sealing stem bolts, largest being spare nacelles for each shuttle class.”

"Oh, boy;" Terry sighed. "At Miyahara level efficiency, that'll take us about 12 hours to complete, and knowing Takahashi, she'll want it done in that time flat and not a minute later."

At that point, Terry finally turned from his console to face the visitors.

"Halloran;" He called out. "Why don't you take over running the diagnostic for me, so we can get this done in the quickest manner possible?"

“My team can handle getting the items where they need to go,” Jane noted. “I’ll have Warrant Officer el-Hamadi and Petty Officer Caracoti report to you in twenty minutes.”

"Christ on a crutch..." Halloran glanced over the list before he moved over to where the Lieutenant was standing and took his place, "Better all of you guys than me, replicating spare nacelles isn't like replicating a plate or anything... One small error in the process, one shortcut taken that shouldn't be and it becomes more a bomb than a functional piece of technology."

Commander Misono raised a brow in perplexion as the two officers traded places and Terry made his way over to join them.

"...Anyways," she muttered as Terry led them over to the Industrial replicators. "Twelve hours, you said? Any way we can expedite the manufacturing process?"

"Commander, when I say Miyahara level efficiency, I only apply the... Former Admiral's name to estimates which take into account and implement all possible shortcuts I can think of:" Terry explained. "There's no further way to expedite the process without compromising safety standards: Knowing Commander Takahashi, she'd want it done as fast as possible without anyone getting hurt."

"Understood," Commander nodded. "Therefore, it's essential that we get this done as soon as we can. Do you happen to know if someone's going to need to be on hand to man the industrial replicator? This could be an overnight job."

"I may not be the chief, but I know that the engineers work in shifts." Terry responded. "You might want to ask the engineers on the next shift. I can get a schedule back to you so you have names to ask around. Worst case; I'll stay and oversee the operation: Surely, the boss will understand if I'm unable to work my next shift because of it."

"Whatever you feel works, Lieutenant," Commander Misono authorized. "Just remember, we're on a tight schedule to get this done. We still don't know when we're going to have to shove off, so it's critical we get this done in a timely fashion."

"Hey, getting things done in a timely manner is what I'm here for:" Terry responded, giving Ichika a wink and a smile.

"Well, if that'll be all, Lieutenant," Commander Misono began, "I believe that you won't be needing Lieutenant Sinclair for anything else?"

"Unless of course she wishes to oversee the process." Terry suggested.

"Very well," Commander Misono nodded turning her attention over to Jane. "You're free to go, Lieutenant; sorry if this took as long as it did."

“It’s getting fixed,” Jane said. “That’s what’s important. I’ll check in on progress. My staff are at your disposal, Mr. Johnston, if you need something.” She turned to the First Officer and nodded. “Commander.” Everything sorted, she left the engine room, satisfied that everything would be resolved.
