1,102 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: The Fast & The Fleet
Location: Conference Room, Deck 1
Timeline: Part 2 of 'Going Behind the Captain's Back'

Previously, on Star Trek Myogi:

Keisuke observed Kurumi's odd behavior when she entered. Maybe it was the late hour getting to her:

"Are you alright, Commander?" Keisuke asked.

Kurumi held her head. "I'm just a little tired that's all." She told him simply. She wasn't going to openly admit something was wrong with her. "It's nothing."

And now, the continuation:

Checking his chronometer, Keisuke decided to go ahead and start the meeting, as the hour was late, and he wouldn't hold it against the people who didn't show up, as the meeting's nature was last minute, and if one had already made plans for the evening, they shouldn't be expected to drop them to attend a meeting.

"I think that's about everyone who's going to show up, so we're going to start." Keisuke said. "Thank you for taking time out of your evening. I know it's rather late, and I'd rather not hold these sorts of meetings without my wife, the captain, present, but I'm told that this can't wait until morning. So, without further ado, I'd like to introduce everyone to our guest speaker, Takeshi Nakazato. He's the former Third Officer of the Myogi, and former leader of the Original Myogi NightKids."

Takeshi nodded and smiled as light applause erupted.

"Thank you, Commander." Takeshi said. "Some of you are probably already familiar with me, as Captain Takahashi brought me in to provide additional driving tutelage. I know I've ridden along with a few of you, and I have watched all of you driving, and I must say how proud I am at the skill all of you have shown behind the wheel. You all have definitely shown yourselves to be worthy successors to my NightKids."

Takeshi proceeded to take a seat.

"But, that's not the reason I've had Commander Takahashi call you all here." He said. "I'm sure you've all noticed over the past week how harsh Captain Takahashi has been in driving your development. Commander Tristana, if memory serves, the captain was threatening to kick you off the NightKids."

"That is correct." Tristana responded.

"Well, there's a reason why she's been acting the way she has:" Takeshi continued. "You see, back when Captain Takahashi and I were cadets, Maporin stood up for an Inuto cadet who was being harassed by an Andorian cadet and got into a physical altercation with her. That Andorian cadet was who we know today as Captain Zh'gero, and it's my understanding that Captain Zh'gero has not let Captain Takahashi live down the fight. Now, she made me promise her not to tell you this, so you'll have to keep this to yourselves.'

"Mr. Nakazato, did the Captain ever tell you what became of that Inuto Cadet?" Ichika asked, seemingly out of the blue.

"N... No, actually..." Takeshi admitted. "I'm afraid that was a detail she skipped over."

Ichika smiled. "Well... let's say that you're looking at her right now."

A moment of silence fell across the room as those gathered proceeded to put two-and-two together.

Takeshi reeled back in surprise.

"You were the Inuto cadet?" He asked. "Well, I suppose that makes this personal for you, too..."

"In the flesh and blood," Ichika admitted before turning her attention to the senior staff. "And now that you're all hearing this first-hand, I have my own two cents to offer in regards to that fateful encounter; back then, I was just 23 years old, fresh out of the Inuto Merchant Marines and coming to grips to the fact that Starfleet wasn't everything I'd been led to believe it was. I had originally enrolled under the belief that this was a noble organization, rooted in virtues of compassion and tolerance, where people joined out of the good of their hearts to work together and make the galaxy a better place."

Her expression faltered. "Unfortunately, after having to reckon with such... bigoted individuals such as Shimakaze Zh'Gero, I was forced to reconsider those notions. I was deeply disheartened, my grades were starting to slip as a result of the emotional rut I now found myself in, and I was beginning to seriously reconsider my career options. But just when I was about to throw in the towel and consider this a wasted endeavor, along comes a total stranger- one who had no obligation to stick her neck out for me- whose subsequent act of selflessness embodied all the virtues I had held dear as a pup."

She looked back up and smiled. "I never got her name that day- could never seem to locate her after the fact- but it helped me to reaffirm that the heroes of my youth were indeed still out there. And in that moment, I yearned for nothing more than to inspire others in the way that nameless cadet had inspired me. I doubled down on my studies, graduated with honors, and really pushed myself for a Command internship, knowing full well that the road ahead was going to be long and fraught with potholes. But I persevered, not merely because I wanted to lead, but I wanted to help. I couldn't have dreamed, once a Command internship finally came knocking, that my Commanding Officer would be none other than the Cadet who stood up for me all those years ago. But looking back in hindsight... I don't think I could've received a better posting."

After a brief silence, Jane Sinclair squeezed Alisha’s hand and stood tall. “Commanders, I think I can speak for us all when I say…we’re in it to win it. We know the stakes. We know what this means to the Captain, to you, Commander Misono, to everyone. We’ll get it done, NightKids style.”

Alisha stood up next to Jane, "I know I sure as hel- heck am not planning on losing to some Andorian bigot." She smiled slightly, "I say we should take a clean sweep, show them once and for all not to mess with Myogi or anyone on board her."

"Now that's something worth fighting for!" Tristana said. "Who's with me?"

Tristana placed her hand on the table. Tristana's hand was soon joined by those of Keisuke, Takeshi, and Elisabeth.

And Jane’s and Alisha’s.

And Ichika's as well.

"NightKids:" Takeshi said.

"NightKids!" Everyone else echoed in unison.
