Mission:
The Fast & The Fleet
Location: Earth Spacedock, Holosuite 5
Timeline: Immediately after 'The Last Battle that Matters'
Previously, on Star Trek: Myogi
As the two R32s rounded the final corner, with the goal in sight, the black R32 had gained a lead by half a car length. After having spent the last few corners in darkness, driving only by the lights of the silver R32 with her foot pinned to the floor, Maho finally turned her headlights back on...
...To find the tachometer pegged at 10,000 RPM, though the engine was likely revving higher than the tachometer could read. By the time Maho realized what she had done, she only had time to gasp before...
BANG!
Oil shot out from under the hood and splattered on the windshield as the engine exploded. As smoke began to rise from under the hood, Maho's R32 began to enter a spin. Shimakaze, in a kneejerk reaction to avoid a colision, lost traction and also began to enter a spin.
However, as Maho began to spin around, she remembered what Takumi had taught her:
"Using the engine's full power is almost surely going to kill it. Hence why it should only be done as a last resort." Takumi explained. "But if you do have to do it, there's something you should keep in mind for when the engine does go..."
Watch the spin... Maho remembered what Takumi had explained next:
Clutch in to regain traction.. Maho engaged the R32's clutch as the rear turned to face the goal.
And... Maho grabbed the gear shift, pulling it all the way back from 5th gear: Into reverse!
With no engine power left, Maho coasted across the finish line backwards.
Meanwhile, Shimakaze had been unaware of the clutch trick, and as such, she spun a full 360 degrees before she managed to regain traction and cross the finish line facing forwards in second place.
And now, the conclusion:
As the adrenaline left Maho, she sat for a moment in the R32 to catch her breath, and only when she did did she fully take in what had just happened:
She had destroyed Nakazato's R32...
Zack's R32... Maho thought, staring at the dead gauge cluster. It's gone...
Maho gripped the steering wheel and shed a tear for the R32 before setting the parking brake for the final time and unbuckling her harness.
It was only when Maho opened the R32's door and stepped out did she hear the cheering for her win: Myogi and Haruna crewmembers alike were chanting her name.
As Maho shut the R32's door, one of the first people to embrace her was her husband, Keisuke.
"YOU DID IT!" He cried out as he hugged his wife. "You did it!"
"Yeah, Keisuke, I did..." Maho muttered. "But at what cost?"
"Hey, Maporin!"
When Maho was released by Keisuke, she saw Takeshi standing there, a hand extended for her to shake.
"You did good out there." He said with a smile as Maho reluctantly shook his hand.
"Thanks, Zack, but... Your car..." Maho trailed off as the two of them looked back on the R32.
"In that race, you and the R32 were one:" Takeshi explained, crossing his arms. "You both knew losing to Shimakaze wasn't an option, and so, the R32 sacrificed itself so you could win."
Maho found herself at a loss for words, unsure how to respond to Zack's words of encouragement.
Jane rushed forward and got close to the Captain and her husband and close friends. “You did it Captain! That was one in a million!” She grinned widely, proud once again to serve under someone as amazing as Maho Takahashi. “Amazing! I’d love to learn how you did that one day!”
"There's no reason to want to learn about that." Maho responded. "What I just did was stupid and reckless, and I blew up the freaking engine..."
Of course, Bree was happy about the outcome of the race, but the nurturer and healer in her couldn't allow herself to celebrate until she was confident neither was not worse for wear by the mind blowing events. Safeties on or not, Scott would not be satisfied until she was sure all was well. She resisted the urge to take out a medical tricorder on the spot. "Is everyone OK?"
"I am not okay!" Shimakaze shouted, approaching Tohru. "Commodore, I hope you're prepared to do the right thing..."
"Which would be...?" Tohru asked, rather confused.
"Commodore; you said yourself that an engine failure would count as an automatic victory for the other participant." Shimakaze said.
"Ah, but Captain Takahashi did manage to cross the finish line first, did she not?" Tohru countered.
"What does it matter if she did?" Shimakaze whined. "Her engine's toast. By the ground rules you laid out, the win should be mine!"
"If the blowout had happened elsewhere on the course, it would be." Tohru responded. "However, since Captain Takahashi managed to cross the finish line, the call stands. Now, if you'll excuse me..."
Tohru proceeded to grab Maho's hand and raise it high into the air.
"Winner: Maho Takahashi!" Tohru declared. "Final score: NightKids - 8, SpeedStars - 4! The overall winners are the USS Myogi NightKids!"
Alisha had sneaked up next to Jane in the excitement and grabbed her hand to give it a squeeze. The two of them winning had helped make it happen, but it truly was a team effort with the entire crew kicking ass the whole day.
Jane grinned when she felt Alisha’s familiar hand squeeze hers. She leaned back to give her girlfriend a kiss on the cheek, then looked back across to the Andorians. “I should’ve made a better effort to get some holocams in here,” she said, quiet enough to make it seem like a private comment but loud enough that others would indeed hear. “It’s like we guessed. She wouldn’t be a gracious loser.”
With a theatrical shrug, Alisha sighed with the same level of 'privacy', glancing over in the same direction as Jane had, nuzzling her neck for a moment, "It's a pity that some people are far too predictable for their own good, along with the rest of their crew."
The Andorian crewmembers of the USS Haruna taking part in the post-race reveling didn't seem to notice the snide comments directed at them, for at the moment they were being said, the noise of the cheering amplified following Tohru's declaration of Maho and, by extension, the NightKids as a whole, the winner, and shortly after the winner was declared, the crowd lifted Maho up onto their shoulders, Maho's pleas to put her down and that she was pregnant were lost in the cheering crowd of Starfleet officers.
