Mission:
Operation Tokyo Return
Location: USS Myogi
Timeline: After 'You've Got the Power (Part 1)'
Previously, on Star Trek: Myogi:
Maho turned to Ops.
"Ops, contact Spacedock departures and request clearance to depart."
Gonzales' fingers danced along the smooth surface of the Ops console.
"Spacedock departures, this is the Starship Myogi, requesting clearance for departure." He said.
"Starship Myogi cleared for departure." The controller responded. "Follow the Starship Elk Grove through space doors and maintain adequate separation."
"Myogi acknowledges; follow Elk Grove through space doors and maintain adequate separation." Gonzales repeated.
And now, the continuation:
Nodding, Maho turned her head towards helm.
"Helm, clear all moorings and take us out." She ordered. "Thrusters only until we clear space doors."
"Moorings are clear," Jane reported. "Taking us out, reverse full thrusters."
The beautiful New Orleans class ship began to slowly back away from its position along the interior structure of Spacedock, arcing gracefully toward the open doors, which were visible through the viewscreen's reverse angle image. The nacelles exited first, followed by the secondary hull and then finally the saucer.
"Clear," reported Jane once they were a full ship length away from the doors. She engaged the main impulse engines and turned the ship toward the outer system, putting more distance between Spacedock, Earth, and Sol while awaiting clear course orders. Beta Antares had been preprogrammed for easy input, but one always waited for the order, lest there be another plan of which the chief flight control officer was unaware.
"Status of the Haruna and Akina?" Maho asked
“Taking position behind us, ma’am,” Jane reported. The two ships had approached them from aft, from Earth orbit rather than Spacedock. “Haruna is twenty kilometres aft and port. Akina is mirroring their position, twenty kilometres aft and starboard. Both are now at half-impulse, matching our speed.” On her display, the three sister ships formed a nice little equilateral triangle.
"Excellent:" Maho said, turning to Ops. "Hail the Haruna and the Akina."
The main viewscreen split to show two other women: The one on the left Maho recognized as Shimakaze Zh'gero. The other she hadn't met yet; the recently-promoted Commander Minna-Dietlinde Wilcke.
"Good morning, Captain, Commander." Maho greeted with a nod. "Helm informs me you'll both be in formation momentarily."
"Indeed we shall be, Captain." Minna was the first to speak. "I can see the parcel is already on board. Be careful with that one." She casually joked with a wink. Minna's tone was more casual than those of Maho and Shimakaze, yet she still held a commanding presence.
"You can bet I'll be watching her closely." Maho muttered. "Also, congratulations on your promotion and new command, Commander Wilcke." Maho gave Minna a nod. The Akina was the last of the maiden three Project Jomo New Orleans class starships, reentering commission after the Myogi and the Haruna, and Maho saw some of herself in Commander Wilcke, especially after she had first taken command of the Myogi.
"Thank you, Captain Takahashi." Minna returned the nod. "I'm looking forward to a routine escort mission."
"I'm sure we all are after what's happened." Maho responded. "So, with that being said, let's focus on the task at hand and focus on delivering the parcel to Beta Antares. I'll leave the coordination to flight control."
Minna and Shimakaze nodded before the communications channels cut off.
Maho sat back in her chair.
"Helm, stand by for..." Maho began, but trailed off as music began to be piped into the bridge. "Where's that music coming from?" She immediately asked Ops.
"It's the Akina, ma'am:" Gonzales responded. "They're broadcasting to the whole formation:"
The image of Minna reappeared in the corner of the Myogi's viewscreen:
"There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God, I know I'm one."
Maho smiled at the poetry of Commander Wilcke's selection; for many moons ago, the New Orleans class starship now known as the USS Myogi was once called the USS Rising Sun, referred to during the Cardassian war as "the ruin of many a poor Cardassian."
"My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new blue jeans
My father was gamblin' man
Down in New Orleans."
"An old human sea shanty, if I'm not mistaken?" Ichika observed.
"When the New Orleans class was brand new in the 2340s, it became something of a tradition for the crews of these ships to sing it when leaving port, whether that be a planet, shipyard, or starbase." Maho explained. "The tradition fell out of practice during the Dominion War, as crews of the time felt it was inappropriate given the circumstances." A smile spread on Maho's face. "It's nice to see that Wilcke is interested in reviving it."
"I see," Ichika remarked as she turned her attention back towards the viewscreen.
"Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and a trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's all drunk."
"Helm, take us along our pre-determined flight path until we clear the system." Maho ordered. "Once we're clear, make the jump to warp."
By this point, Jane was humming along to the tune. She couldn't hold a tune in a bag, but humming along with it was fun. "Yes, ma'am," she acknowledged.
A few minutes later, they were clear of the asteroid belt. Along their course, the outer planets were all well out of their way. "Course is laid in," Jane said. "All ships report ready. Jumping to Warp Seven now." She activated the warp drive, beginning the process to bring the Myogi and her sister ships to the speed of light and then well beyond it.
"Oh, mothers, tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun."
The three New Orleans class starships made the jump to warp as Minna finished the song:
"Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm going back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain."
"Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And god, I know, I'm one."
